Professional, commercial (cargo ships, passenger ships, service vessels) or fishing vessels must comply with international, European and national standards in terms of safety (ability to face the dangers of the sea), habitability and prevention of marine pollution. The 16 ship safety centers (CSN), specialized services of the Interregional Departments of the Sea (DIRM) and of the Departments of the Sea (DM), perform in particular the mission of inspecting ships flying the French flag, for the purposes of verification. their compliance with these standards, and the issuance of various certificates and navigation permits.
The control of ships is in part delegated to approved private organizations, able to develop the most in-depth expertise. Ship classification societies are our priority. The inspections consider the material aspects and the equipment conditions (crew) of these ships. In addition, ship safety inspectors carry out audits of vessels subject to the international safety management code (known as the ISM code - international safety management): they thus endeavor to verify safety and operating procedures. of the vessel applied by the crew.
